Birmingham City rocked by news that David Murphy is out for the season…  David Murphy has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

The damage to the Birmingham City left-back’s knee has been revealed as severe.

Murphy had an exploratory operation last night to determine how serious his cartilage problem was.

A microfracture around the cartilage on the thigh bone means that Murphy has been sidelined for five to six months.

It’s a massive blow to both Blues and the 28-year-old, who was arguably the best left-back in the Championship last season.

Murphy came off with five minutes to go in Blues last match, a 3-2 home defeat by Hull City. And he was booked in to theatre after initial checks.

Manager Lee Clark said before the procedure that the best case scenario was a four to six-week lay-off.

Blues have now lost both their first choice full-backs to knee injuries.

Right-back Stephen Carr had ligament surgery in September and Clark said yesterday that if he did return to play again this season, it would be at the tail end of the campaign.

Paul Robinson will now continue to fill-in for Murphy. #bcfc
