Lee Clark was proud of the way his charges bounced back with a gritty win on the South Coast.

Blues performed with great bravery to hold out npower Championship table-toppers Brighton & Hove Albion after Chris Burke’s first-half wonder strike gave them the lead.

And victory at the American Express Community Stadium ensured Birmingham could move on from last Saturday’s heavy defeat at home to Barnsley.

Clark told bcfc.com: “We showed courage, we showed desire, we showed pride in one another and we showed we’re men who stick our chest out. We could have easily crumbled after what had happened last week but we put in a performance that was worthy of the badge and worthy of the football club.

“We had to do something. We knew we had to respond in a positive way. I was looking for a performance that was worthy of the stature of the club and we got that and thankfully we got the result that followed with the performance.”

The key to Blues winning all three points was their outstanding defensive performance. Despite playing much of the game in their own half, the visitors prevented Brighton from creating a clear cut opportunity during the 90 minutes.

Clark added: “I just thought we defended with desire, with passion and it was all there in abundance. We defended to a man. We done what I call the ‘ugly side’ which gives you the assistance go and win football games. We competed, we stopped the opposition from playing. We won headers, we won tackles, we were competitive all over the pitch so all that type of stuff helps us win a football match.

The Blues boss concluded: “I’m just delighted that we’ve responded from what was an awful weekend for everyone connected with the club. You couldn’t have picked a tougher place to come after the performance last weekend and we’ve performed brilliantly.” #bcfc
