West Ham v Birmingham City

West Ham and Birmingham City who sit 3rd and 4th in the Championship respectively come face to face in a game that is a must win for both teams if they wish to keep up their pursuit of that automatic promotion place and avoid the lottery of the play-offs.West Ham’s home form at present is way below what their fans expect and questions have been asked in recent weeks as to whether manager Sam Allardyce is the man for the job, with the team not playing the football many hammer’s fans would expect or have been used to in the past being at the fore front of their minds the pressure is really on for them to start producing at home, that said they are still within striking distance should any of the top 2 start to feel the pressure on the final run to seasons end but any more home dropped points could mean an end to that automatic promotion dream. Birmingham City who are looking assured of at least a play-off place come into the game on the back of three 3-1 wins 2 away from home and high in confidence after a poor run of form in February/March saw them drop out of the top 6  by the start of April. Manager Chris Hughton has challenged the team to finish the season a high with a run of results that could see them challenge for that automatic promotion spot but it will require all 3 points for that to happen, but with that outside chance still possible you can be sure that the players will be fired up and ready for the game. With both teams scoring freely at the moment it could be down to which defence performs and can handle the pressure best on the day that could take the points at the end of the game and vital points they could prove to be.

Boleyn Ground

West Ham have an ever improving injury list after welcoming back Papa Bouba Diop in the win at Barnsley on Friday will only have Joey O’Brien on the Physio’s table and remaining a doubt otherwise Big Sam will have a full strength squad to choose from.

Captain Kevin Nolan commented

“Chris Hughton has done a great job there and I’m absolutely delighted for him, to be fair. Chris and Colin Calderwood were two great coaches who I worked under up at

“They were massive for me at Newcastle. Chris made me captain up there. Obviously I’m  delighted to see what he’s doing at Birmingham but hopefully on Monday we’ll be sticking one over him.Newcastle and I’m looking forward to seeing them again.

Birmingham City are in a similar position to West Ham in that the only injury problems they have are ones that have missed the last few games Carr, Spector and Ibanez. So manager Chris Hughton will have no new injury worries to concern himself about for such a vital game.

Manager Chris Hughton said

“We’ve actually got a fabulous goalscoring record away from home this season.I think that has been important because at this stage of the season if I look at the group of teams that are vying for a play-off position those teams are going to have to win away games.”
