Match Preview – Birmingham City v Cardiff City   Leave a comment

Birmingham vs Cardiff

Birmingham City and Cardiff City will be hoping to give their respective play-off aspirations a kick-start after stuttering through their last few games with Birmingham only winning 2 of the previous 9 games and Cardiff winning 2 from last 10 in the league, so both teams could not be in worse form at such an important time of the season. However it’s not all doom and gloom as both remain firmly in the play-off picture despite their form and it’s hard to say whether the poor recent form of both teams can be put down to hard seasons with Birmingham City having competed in the Europa League and Cardiff City’s  extended run in the League Cup which saw them play well in the Final v Liverpool. One thing that is for certain is that both teams need to start putting a run of form together if they want to remain play-off contenders come season’s end, so a victory for either team could well be the boost they are looking for.

Birmingham City will be forced to make changes to the team that started in the midweek defeat away at Portsmouth with Murphy starting his one match suspension after receiving 2 harsh yellows. Blues boss Chris Hughton will have Spector and Carr still missing through injury which could cause him a bit of a dilemma as the only other recognised defender is centre half Ibanez. The good news is that Jordan Mutch will be back in contention for a starting position after serving his 3 match ban and Erik Huseklepp who was ineligible  in midweek.

Blues Paul Trollope says

“We are very much in the hunt, the league is very close, and the other results this week show that teams can take points you perhaps don’t always expect them to,’’ he added. “There is still a lot to play for and from the Middlesbrough game and the other night there were good signs on a number of levels.

“What we have to do in these remaining weeks is make sure we’re consistent in our preparation, so the players know what’s expected of them.

Cardiff City have a few players with little niggles and will give a late fitness test to Kenny Miller otherwise Manager Malky Mackay with have a full squad to pick from and could go with the same starting line up that started in the midweek home draw v Coventry with Miller on the bench.

Malky Mackay said

“This game against Birmingham is as important as the seven games that come after it; it’s no less or more important than any of those. We start on Sunday against a team who are up there and around about the same position as us. I think their result against Portsmouth on Tuesday, coupled with ours against Coventry the following night highlight the inconsistency amongst teams in this division at the moment. We have to hold our nerve and stay calm now.

“Certainly at West Ham, Southampton and Brighton earlier this season we’ve done well. But St. Andrew’s has never been an easy place to go and Sunday is going to be a tough, tough game.”
