Match Preview – Portsmouth V Birmingham City   1 comment

Portsmouth v Birmingham City

Portsmouth who went in to administration in February have had to endure the threat of closing down and the loss of star players to rival teams Plus a 10 points deduction all which has left them anchored at the bottom of the championship and firmly staring relegation in the face. Pompey are struggling to turn things around under the younger players with only 6pts from a possible 36pts since the turn of the year but will be hoping for a change of  fortunes against Birmingham after  securing a home Draw at the weekend v Bristol City.Meanwhile Birmingham City a side that many expected at the start of the season to be in a similar position to their south coast rivals will be looking  to build on their 3-0 win at home on Saturday which moved them back into 4th place in the championship and a play off place, once more hoping to put a run of results together in their pursuit of at least the play offs come season end

Portsmouth Manager Michael Appleton will be looking to the younger players who played well on Saturday to step up again and perform well once more for the struggling outfit in a hope to get something from the game.  Appleton looks set to name the same team that started v Bristol with no new injury worries or suspensions.

Appleton said: “We did more than enough to beat Bristol City, but just couldn’t put the ball over the line. But if we can continue to create chances like that and keep getting in good positions then hopefully somewhere along the line someone will get punished.

“You just have to keep trusting the players and reminding them of the times they’ve scored goals. The last thing I want when they get into goalscoring opportunities is not to take responsibility.

“Birmingham have lots of options. They’re very physical, with the boy Nikola Zigic up front a handful, especially when they get the ball out wide. Chris Hughton will be looking to kick on over the next 10 games and get them promoted.

“But we’re on our own patch again after a very good display on Saturday, we haven’t got that many injuries and the lads have been buoyant in training.”

Birmingham City  will also be hoping to keep the same starting line up that helped them to a resounding win over fellow play off hopefuls Middlesbrough with Zigic and King once again leading the attack. Manager Chris Hughton will still have Carr, Spector and Mutch missing and slight doubts about Fahey and Ramage so assuming they both pass fit it could be a rare thing for Birmingham this season being able to send out  the same side for 2 consecutive games.

Birmingham Midfielder Chris Burke is expecting a tough game saying

“They are fighting for their lives. It’s going to be a very difficult game.

“They came to us and gave a very good account of themselves. It was a late goal from Nathan Redmond that won it for us.”

We know it’s going to be a tough, tough game.”
