Birmingham City New Loan Signing pt3….Peter Ramage   1 comment

Peter Ramage - Birmingham City v Derby County - St Andrews

Signing number 3 comes in the form of utility Defender Peter Ramage from Queens Park Rangers again like the others he is on loan until the end of the season.

Peter Ramage aged 28, Born in Ashington, Northumberland on 22nd November 1983 the son of former RFU world cup referee Iain Ramage and attended Whitley Bay High School  joined Newcastle United academy at the age of 11.

Over the next few years Peter climbed through the ranks at his beloved Newcastle a team he had supported as a lad and went on to be Captain of the reserve before finally breaking into the first team and making his Full debut in March 2005 against Olympiacos in the UEFA Cup .

The following season 2005/06 Ramage became a regular in the first team mainly because of an injury to Stephen Carr. He made the position his own until the arrival of a new manager called Sam Allardyce but then an injury put him back down the ranks at the then St James Park, the now renamed ‘sports direct arena’.

In 2007/08 Ramage was already thinking about what to do next after Newcastle because his contract was due to expire at the end of the season and the new boss Kevin Keegan was not picking him, despite 12 years with the club and 51 first team appearances. QPR came in for Ramage in the summer of 2008 and he signed a 3 year contract and played under Ian Dowie at the London club. Over the next few years he went on to establish himself as a regular in the QPR team playing 65 games and finally scoring his first senior goal at the start of the 2009/10 season in the1-1 draw against Blackpool. Then the 2010/11 became a bit of a disaster for Ramage as the defender after he suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury in QPR’s 3-0 win at home to Middlesbrough in September that ruled him out for the majority of that seasons campaign.

After recovering from the injury, he found things had changed at Loftus Road with promotion to the Premier League. Ramage signed a one year contract extension at QPR until the end of 2011/12 season but then spent the first half of the season on loan at Crystal Palace playing 19 games before returning to QPR in January 2012.

In February 2012 Ramage joined Chris Hughton‘s Birmingham City for the remainder of the season, making his debut for the Midlands club in the 2-2 draw v Derby County at St Andrews on March 3rd

Chris Hughton On Peter Ramage

“Peter is someone I know well enough from Newcastle,” said the Blues boss.

“He was only there for a short period of time when I was there before moving on to QPR.

“He’s got some versatility at the back and he’s a lad that went to Crystal Palace this year and played something like 15 games.

“What’s important is that he’s fit and up to speed at the moment as well.

“We have already made some additions to the squad but from a defensive point of view it’s an area that we’re desperate to have some cover.

“He can play anywhere across the back line, and defensively with what we’ve got and with Stephen Carr out for the next few weeks he provides much needed experience across the back.

“He is also a very good individual and he will fit quickly into the group of lads that we have here and he also knows this division.”
